  1. The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor degree obtained with Third Class Honours or Category III, provided that such applicants are in possession of other qualifications or relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree.
  2. The Faculty Admissions Committee may, after thorough examination of documents submitted in support of the qualifications presented, and following an interview, recommend the admission of applicants applying for admission in terms of the University’s Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) who are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and documented experience. The admission of such applicants may be made subject to those conditions that may be imposed to address any lacunae in the applicants’ academic preparation.

All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit which shall be measured by means of a personal interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

The aim of this programme is to introduce you to key issues and theories relating to gender and sexualities. The programme has a predominantly taught component, and a research element in the form of a long essay. You are expected to cover all the prescribed readings and participate in all activities related to the programme. You are advised to keep pace with the work set, allowing sufficient time for any research work and/or revision. Depending on the qualification submitted on entry, the Board will require you to register for the set compulsory study-units. The Board may also ask you to register for other study-units which together with the compulsory study-units will amount to a maximum total of 60 ECTS credits.

All students accepted to join the preparatory programme shall be required to register for the following compulsory study-units. Depending on the qualification submitted on entry, the Board may also require students to register for other study-units to a maximum total of 60 ECTS credits.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Gender, Society and Culture - M.A. (M. GSC) - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate a deep understanding and knowledge of research and theories relating to gender and sexualities;
  • show that you can critically evaluate and review existing literature and research in relation to gender and sexualities;
  • demonstrate an ability to plan, manage and conduct appropriate research in the required fields;
  • be able to analyse and interpret findings, while identifying trends, and new phenomena;
  • be able to document, communicate and share findings with colleagues, lecturers and the general public in class and during public presentations;
  • be able to collate, document and present a research abiding with academic standards.
